WebSkeletal and cardiac muscle cells are called striated muscle because of the very regular arrangement of their intracellular contractile units, sarcomeres, at the light microscope (LM) and electron microscope (EM) levels. This regular arrangement imparts a cross-striated (or striped) appearance.
